The plight of the honey bee was a major topic of discussion by Prince Edward County council last week.
Honey bees have been on the decline for years and that’s worrying many people.
Prince Edward County resident Kate MacNaughton asked County council to support a moratorium on the use of a nicotine-laced substance that coats the seeds used by farmers.
The seed coating prevents infestations of crops by various kinds of insects.
Meanwhile, John Thompson of the Prince Edward Agricultural Society, says farmers know there’s a problem with the nicotine substance harming honey bees, but says an outright ban on its use isn’t necessary.
County council is asking for more information, and no decision was made.
