It has been an 18 year, long process and any optimism has all but disappeared when it comes to public access to Baldhead Beach near Consecon in the County.
The Friends of Wellers Bay has been working with Environment Canada and the Department of National Defence since 1995, in hopes of getting at least partial public access to Baldhead Beach, a sandy spit between Lake Ontario and Wellers Bay.
During World War II the military used the area as a practice bombing range and drop zone. The military continues to use the area.
Millions of dollars have been spent cleaning munitions debris from the site, and four years ago it appeared that Department of National Defence believed the beach was safe for the public.
However, it has always been a National Wildlife Area as well.
Now, a draft Management Plan from the federal government is proposing that it remain illegal for anyone to set foot on Baldhead.
The Friends of Wellers Bay have commented on the government report, saying it contains errors, omissions, and exaggerations that will only breed further cynicism in the workings of government.
A final management plan is the next step.
