With Saint Patrick’s Day just around the corner many people are thinking – green beer!
Green Quinte sat down with Steam Whistle Pilsner to talk about how there is more brewing behind its iconic green bottle than just the colour.
Communications Director Sybil Taylor says while the Steam Whistle offers a smooth great taste, she wants customers to also know how the company continues to be a leader in providing an environmentally friendly product.
Taylor said while Food Canada allows over 100 ingredients in beer, Steam Whistle uses only four, all natural ingredients (pure spring water, malted barley, hops and yeast), adding they were the first brewery in the country to go GMO (Genetically Modified Organism)-free.
Steam Whistle’s green initiatives just keep growing. The signature ‘Green’ glass bottles can be recycled up to 3 times more than the industry brown bottle, the brewery is powered using 100% green electricity from Bullfrog Power, deep lake water cooling chills their facilities in the summer months, trucks are fueled with Bio Diesel made from soya fuel & recycled restaurant grease, they use Steam Heat to brew, wash bottles, and to heat their building and their waste diversion program sends leftover edibles from brewery events to a local street mission and organic waste to commercial composts.
For all of their outstanding effort in being environmentally friendly Steam Whistle has received Canada’s Clean 50 awards, been named Canada’s Best Managed Companies for seven years running and recently earned Gold at Share the Road Cycling Coalition for our extensive support of the cycling community.
Taylor said about two years ago the company started by putting a bike repair station outside the brewery’s front doors so that staff could enjoy a clean commute.
Since the first batch of Steam Whistle Pilsner rolled off the line in March 2000, Taylor said it was their founders hope that they were going to be the most respected beer in Canada.
