There can sometimes be a lot of confusion as to what does, or doesn’t, go in your green bin.
Green Quinte went to the source and found out what is acceptable for the green bin so it’s no longer a guessing game.
Food Scraps
- Meat, poultry, shellfish and bones
- Egg, cheese and other dairy products
- Table scraps and plate scrapings
- Fruits and vegetables
- Bread, dough, pasta and grains
- Coffee grounds, filters and teabags
Food Soiled Paper
- Kitchen paper towels
- Paper bags
- Greasy pizza boxes (not accepted in Blue Box)
- Coated paper take-out containers (ie. French fry boxes)
- Paper napkins and waxed cardboard
- Uncoated paper cups, plates and carry-out trays (no lids, straws or creamers – take-out coffee cups are not compostable)
- Freezer burnt meat wrapped in paper is allowed
The list of unacceptable items is a bit longer.
Plastic bags of any kind not displaying the Certified Compostable logo cannot be used in your Kitchen Catcher or Green Bin.
Biodegradable bags, Oxo-biodegradable bags and recyclable bags are also not compostable.
If any of these items are in your Green Bin, truck drivers will not empty your Green Bin.
