In this week’s Water Wednesday post, Quinte Conservation says your water quality can be affected by your septic system.
Septic systems are considered potential threats to drinking water sources sources because of the possibility of leaching of contaminants like chemicals and bacteria into ground or surface water.
Quinte Conservation says your septic system should be inspected annually and your septic tank pumped every 3 to 5 years.
Other tips include:
Knowing the location of your septic tank and bed to protect them from damage.
Don’t drive over them, construct anything on top or plant trees or shrubs to close to the septic system as roots may interfere with its function.
Avoid putting grease or food as well as paint, pesticides and toxic chemicals down your drain.
Don’t overload or clog your septic system by doing multiple loads of laundry in one day.
Every Wednesday through July 5, Quinte Conservation will be sharing tips to protect drinking water sources.
