Environment Canada issued an air quality statement for the region on Thursday (June 1) as hot, sunny conditions are expected to cause high levels of air pollution.
Quinte area residents could experience symptoms such as coughing, throat irritation, headaches, or shortness of breath.
Youngsters, the elderly, and those with certain ailments are especially at risk.
They include those with lung or heart disease.
Thursday’s forecast high is 31 degrees which would break the high temperature record for June 1 set in 2007 (29.1)
Statement from Environment Canada:
High levels of air pollution are possible today.
A SPECIAL AIR QUALITY STATEMENT is in place due to the possibility of deteriorating air quality. Hot and sunny conditions are expected to cause increasing high levels of air pollution in the above regions.
Moderate risk AQHI values are expected throughout the day with the potential of short-term high risk AQHI values this afternoon into early this evening.
Individuals may experience symptoms such as increased coughing, throat irritation, headaches or shortness of breath. Children, seniors, and those with cardiovascular or lung disease, such as asthma, are especially at risk.
Exposure to air pollution is particularly a concern for children, the elderly, and those who have underlying medical conditions such as lung or heart disease.
