The City of Belleville has made a green choice for ice resurfacing at the Quinte Sports and Wellness Centre.
At it’s July 10 meeting, Council approved the purchase of two electric Zamboni ice resurfacing machines to replace two well-past-their-prime units.
The average life span of a Zamboni is about 12 years.
The two current machines were purchased in 2003 and 2008.
With 35 years of combined service, they are no longer reliable due to frequent breakdowns and costly repairs.
The City is purchasing the two Zambonis for just over $344,000, including HST.
The original budgets included funds to extend the needed electrical supply to the north end of the CAA Arena to accommodate the new electric vehicles, however, staff have identified an alternative power source closer to the necessary location that will be much more cost-effective.
