With the move to a producer-funded model for recycling collection, rather than a municipality-funded model, the Centre and South Hastings Waste Services Board is preparing to shut down.
Prince Edward County’s Committee of the Whole discussed the imminent dissolution of the board during their Thursday meeting.
The Waste Services Board included Belleville, Quinte West, Centre Hastings, and other local municipalities.
The committee was provided with an agreement that outlined the process of shutting down the board. Under the agreement, recycle pick-up will be taken over by Circular Materials Ontario on July 17, with the board being fully dissolved on December 3t. After services are no longer being provided, the assets of the board are to be sold off and the proceeds split among all the participating municipalities.
In order to still provide electronic waste disposal to the community, e-waste disposal bins are to be set up at the South Marysburgh Landfill and Sophiasburg Waste Transfer Station.
After a brief debate, the motion was amended to allow the collected e-waste to be provided to the Wellington Rotary Club, who had previously collected e-waste as a fundraising effort.
The amended motion was passed, and sent on to council for final approval.
