The cities of Belleville and Quinte West are teaming up for their annual curbside Giveaway Day this year.
Giveaway Day will be held in both municipalities on Saturday, April 15.
Residents are invited to place unwanted household items in good condition on the curb in front of their homes for others to take, giving old items a new life and diverting them from the landfill.
Items should be labelled with stickers or signs to indicate they are free.
Appropriate items to give away include DVDs, books, furniture, electronics, small appliances, kitchen items and construction materials, including hardware, lumber and drywall.
Consumer Product Safety Bureau of Health Canada advises that the following items should not be given away or picked up: baby walkers, cribs, car seats, strollers, playpens, bath seats, mattresses, blinds and toys.
Uncollected items should be removed from the curb at the end of the day as they ill not be picked up by the city and could be subject to by-law enforcement if left out.
Giveaway Day runs from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. in Belleville and 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. in Quinte West.
The rain date is Sunday, April 16.
Picking Items Up
- Respect other people’s property – do not walk on people’s lawns or gardens.
- Take only the items marked ‘FREE’ and placed at the curb.
- Do not leave previously picked-up items on the curb at other people’s property.
- Always practice good hand hygiene before and after handling items, and ensure they are properly cleaned and disinfected when brought home.
What to do with Leftover Items
Residents can easily donate gently-used items they no longer want to local thrift stores and reuse stores, some of which offer pickup service. If items are not accepted for donation, residents have many options for waste removal and disposal, including bulky item pickup at reasonable rates, as well as landfill and transfer stations. Items can also be offered for sale/donation through yard/garage sales or through online classifieds.
