Spills from home heating oil and household chemicals can harm your drinking water sources.
Some tips to reduce the risk of contamination:
Store chemical products in their original containers and away from wells or surface water sources and perform regular checks on the containers for leaks or damages.
Chemical products should not be stored inside the home – store them in a separate building if possible.
Avoid storing them in areas with fluctuating temperatures.
Dispose of chemical products correctly.
Home heating oil can also contaminate drinking water systems if it is improperly stored or spilled.
Fuel spills should be reported to the Ontario Spills Action Centre (1-800-268-6060) and your fuel supplier.
Take preventative measures like hiring a professional to perform maintenance once per year and placing a drip tray under your tank.
