A Mobile boat cleaning station is being made available at Prince Edward County’s boat launches again this summer in an effort to combat invasive species.
The cleaning trailer is being made available through a partnership between the municipality and Quinte Conservation. Boaters are encouraged to use the waterless cleaning system to clean off any potential invasive species clinging to their boat, preventing them from hitching a ride to a new ecosystem.
Invasive species clinging to boats can be introduced to new waterways where they haven’t already been, disrupting the local food chain and causing problems for native species that can have trouble competing.
The boat cleaner will be available at the following locations and times:
May 28 to June 4 – Picton (1 Head Street)
July 9 to July 16 – West Lake (Beach Street)
July 16 to July 23 – Wellers Bay (158 Edward Drive)
August 20 to August 27 – Mabel Klienstuber (1260 County Road 12)
August 27 to September 3 – Glendon Green (1954 County Road 18)
September 10 to September 17 – H.J Macfarland (12106 Loyalist Parkway)
September 17 to September 24 – North Port (End of Solmes Street)
September 24 to October 1 – Big Island (243 North Big Island Road)
A demonstration on how to use the boat cleaner can be found on the county’s youtube channel here.
