Quinte Field Naturalists is seeking volunteers as it hosts the 4th annual Buckthorn Blitz on Saturday October 18 and Sunday October 19.
Volunteers are needed to help pull Buckthorn branches.
Dense thickets of the non-native Buckthorn have overtaken West Point.
Buckthorn was first introduced to the County in the late 19th century and was useful for planting in hedgerows to separate fields and control the movement of livestock.
However, the fast-growing decorative shrub crowds out native species and changes the soil composition by creating a nitrogen imbalance that is detrimental to native plants.
Its late-season berries are an attractive food source for migrating birds, who can then spread the seeds across the province.
The Buckthorn Blitz will run from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. both days.
Volunteers are welcome one or both days.
A hearty lunch is provided.
Please wear close toed shoes or boots and dress appropriately for walking in the forest.
